A progressive, in my view, sees himself as an inseparable component of the human and natural environment in which he exists. Accordingly, he feels a responsibility to the larger world of which he is a part. He is committed to protecting the whole and is prepared to make sacrifices for the common good. The progressive recognizes the indispensability of government for purposes of addressing societal needs and is prepared to use the instruments of government for such purposes. The progressive understands that unlike any profession, association, religion, or ethnic entity, government is the only entity that embraces the totality of the nation and can act authoritatively for the people as a whole; it has a responsibility for the common good that cannot be delegated to any other entity.
