Here's what being a progressive means to me: I believe in government, big when needed to deal with big issues like national health, Social Security, disaster relief and energy policy. The national infrastructure belongs to the people, and I oppose privatizing it. Government should stay out of people’s private lives, provided they don’t try to impose their wills on others, but should intervene when they do. There should be severe limits on government secrecy, and an impenetrable firewall between government and religion. I believe in conservation of resources. Government should live within its means. All people have an inherent right to decent health care. I think the Supreme Court decision stating that money equals speech (I forget the name of the case) was its worst since Plessy v. Ferguson. I doubt that democracy can survive it.
