Progressives are for equality in human well-being, and true democracy in that order of priority. The prioritiy is for two reasons: 1) True democracy occurs only when power is equalized, which cannot happen when human well-being is still unequal; 2) equality in well-being can happen relatively rapidly, as in Cuba, but the equality of power requires cultural, institutional and educational changes that occur slowly, as also the Cuban case demonstrates. Secondly acting as a progressive requires more than good intentions. It requires sufficient analysis and understanding of current social structures of power and their history on which to build effective strategies for change.
