Progressives believe that it is worth ceaselessly struggling to persuade others concerning those basic truths Jefferson naively thought were self-evident: We ARE equally created by America's God (who also created the rest of the world) and S/he cares not a whit about our mode of worship. We are therefore free to pursue our private lives. As for the government, 'we the people' having instituted it, it must take as its main mission securing those innate rights of 'we the people'. Progressives also embrace Madison's goals: '...to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity...' As Casey Stengel said, 'You could look it up...' The struggle is twenty-first century but the beliefs and goals are eighteenth. And Progressives hold that in a global community, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind is self-evident. The Progressive agenda is a quintessential American agenda.
