The term is relative, used to differ us from 'conservatives', which is as bad a term as the other. But progressive can be thought of as meaning that you believe in a human being's need & right to self-actualize. That's the purpose of human beings on earth, not to strengthen the state, not consumerism, but finding out who you really are. If you're going to do that, you need food, healthcare, a safe & non-stressful environment, & rewarding work. Everyone has the same right to these things, & we can afford to make sure everyone has them.
