Until the word liberal was turned into a four-letter slur, it was sufficient to define what I suppose is implicit in the neologism progressive. Before the illiterate occupant of the president’s office attacked the language (i.e., nucular and many other examples) with compassionate conservatism (nearly an oxymoron) there was a large group of citizens who espoused liberal ideas with reference to education, taxation, gender relations, religion. ecology, peace, foreign relations and, for that matter, human relations. It matters little what label one chooses to apply to that population, it is the population that has traditionally stood for those values the Republican Party has perverted into its political agenda.
