A progressive realizes that governments are established as cooperative enterprises to lift people out of the mud and give them a chance at, as Thomas Jefferson wrote, 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.' Since government is an arbitrary cooperative by nature, and since it is people-centered by nature, we believe that it is appropriate for it to be engaged in all that enables people to grow and prosper. We do NOT believe that it should ever be manipulated to the private gain of a few, but should serve ALL of the people, since it belongs to them.
