A progressive believes that to collect, consolidate, distribute and use the common resources of the people to benefit everyone equally is the legitimate role of government. Taxes come from all the people according to their ability to pay. Examples of the commons are the national infrastructure, fire, police and military protection, education, health and the environment. A government of, by and for the people also helps those who are too young, old or disabled to care for themselves. With equality of opportunity, individuals rise above the crowd based upon ability, with no government interference in their personal behavioral choices.
