A progressive is a liberal with backbone and a clear set of principles. They are unashamedly and uncompromisingly anti-racist, pro-tolerance, pro-diversity, pro-choice, pro-environment, pro-labor, anti-corporate, anti-imperialist, anti-militarism, anti-theocracy, anti-poverty, anti-oligarchy, and usually stand for universal health care, quality education, affordable higher education, and they ALWAYS stand with the majority in defending themselves from the class warfare waged against us by the rich and the religious right. They know that 99 times out of 100 the word 'reform' in the mouth of a Republican is an obscenity and cover for an attack on workers, the middle class, small business, the elderly, school children, the homeless, immigrants, etc.. -- plain folks rather than the privileged and wealthy and their corporate culture.A progressive is a pacifist at heart and a fighter when they need to be. A progressive thinks in terms of decades, generations and centuries rather than narrow quarterly returns, two year election cycles or the supposedly immanent rapture.A progressive is proud, but not arrogant, and their concept of justice always includes economic justice as well as social justice. They almost always acknowledge that the Bill of Rights is probably the finest social contract that humanity has yet to come up with and they fight tirelessly to protect it from the right wingers who work to dismantle it.Progressives are my kind of people.
