A progressive believes all people have basic human rights and the first obligation of government is to insure these rights. Life is not fair, but the second obligation of government is to ensure that its laws are just and the implementation is fair. While government cannot mitigate all of lifes unfairness, it should work toward obtaining a fair and just balance of the needs and rights of all.A progressive also views the rights and obligations of Americans within the context of the larger global community.
