A progressive is someone who applauds rather than panics when the government welcomes and assists immigrants or tries to offer ways for more luckless souls to crawl out of their pits. He or she actually worries about thóse colleagues who lacks health insurance rather than assuming that they'll get their act together on their own one of these days. A progressive sees progress in helping others, not the decline of civilization! I'm on a 2-week visit to the Netherlands, where everyone has free health care, education until age 30, free language lessons if one is a newcomer, and while it's only been a glimpse, it's been a revealing one. Of course, the system has its problems, but maybe it's just a question of execution. Anyway, I think a progressive stance can lead to better living for more, and doesn't that just make life better for all?
