A progressive is someone who believes that institutions are created to serve people. Proposed actions should be judged by one criterion: does this proposal meet the needs of all the people? What does not meet the needs of all the people should be modified so that it does. As Lincoln so eloquently said in the Gettysburg Address: “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us . . . that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
